It seems easy for celebrities such as Bono and Angelina Jolie to accuse America of not donating enough. However, the video showed that the American people give time and money more than any other country. It seems each week our school is sponsoring a new charity or fundraiser. Americans give significant amounts out of pocket, but they aren't all celebrities with large amounts of expendable money. The government itself has other problems with money that it should focus on. With as large of a national deficit as our government has, it cannot afford to sponsor every new cause. Overall, I think that Americans do more than is normally attributed to them.
It's just like everything else related to how Americans work. We generally take things into our own hands and don't care to let government interfere/ do things. It's the entire thing dealing with how we don't trust our government, or any other government, to actually do anything. So, we take things in our own hands and donate individually. But to say that we donate more by throwing random percentages and charts is meaningless. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that we ae either lower than other countries overall or break even. Because if we were higher, we DEFINITELY would have seen it.
I think that it is a cool thing that our people give more than any other countries.I think that even though out government doesnt give the most percent of our wealth compared to other countries but I don't think our govenrment has to do as much because our people give alot.
I dont know how accurate the San Fransico and South Dakota test can be, because it may be Democrat or Republican as a whole,but there is a mix of each party in both areas. One other statistic that suprised me was that the middle class gave the least percentage wise. The working poor class are the ones that give the most to charity, but not the poor people on welfare. I think as a whole America is a very generous and caring country but to try and break it down into what group gives more can be very inaccurate.
Similar to the neglected orphans in Western Africa and the neglected diseases in Nigeria, we are being neglected! Neglected of all the contributions us, civilians, have done to other countries in the world who are in deep need of help. We are not "Stingy Americans" we are "Neglected Americans." Out of the goodness of our hearts people do several charity work, like myself. It seems to me that it's more caring and personal when a charity donates rather than the government. The government just hand them money, "here you go, take it" but the charities actually spent their time into their donations.
It doesn't surprise me at all that the government gives such a small percentage multiple ways. First off, in my opinion most of those bureaucrats are greedy pigs. They have no incentive to give anything other than public popularity. Second, I'm wouldn't trust any government official with any form of charity. Look at how many people take advantage of welfare, and that's in our own country! We also have a war and a recession to worry about so it's even more amazing that people are giving as much as they are now.

Maybe....individual Americans are stingy by our own societal standards, but as individuals we are charitable compared to other countries. Americans are encouraged by society to donate to charities all time-bell ringeres outside of Wal-mart, donating a dollar at Hy-vee's register-so individuals who don't contribute to charities seem selfish, especially when helping out is so easy and accessible. But as a whole, American individuals donate much more than other countries. This is especially shown when looking at individuals and organazitions, like churches and Angelina Jolie, who take time to volunteer for charities, as the video highlighted.
I dont understand why they always talking about celebrities giving money. They were just graced with a lot of money and fame so they are able to give to people in need. If i was given lots of money by barely working i would give it away to more needy people. It would not be necessary for me to keep all of it. So are we stingy? to some extent, but less people would be stingy if they had a lot of money like other celebrities, but currently people have to worry more about themselves because some are barely getting by so why should they worry about people in other countries when they themselves are suffering
Conservatives give 30 percent more, yet we make less money. Those who think that the governmetn is responsible for giving people money will give less (aka democrats). Those who think that the government should not regulate money, give money. This is because the poor because without our help will not make any money. I thought it was portrayed that liberals were fairly selfish. This doesn't affect government very much though. It only presents a small part of the conservatives, or liberals ideology.
Once again the media accuses America of being worse than they are. The American people are some of the least greedy people and they care for others. I'm glad to see a video that shows that. It makes good note that it is the American government that is less giving than the people themselves who give nearly 900 dollars a year
Most Americans donate their time and money to many different organizations and charities. I don't think that we are stingy because we give more than any other country. I agree with Amy that celebrities can easily say we need to do more because they have loads of extra time and money. Our government does not have a responsibility to help other countries. The amount our government sends in aid is the amount that they see fit to give away. America has its own problems just like the countries in need but, we never complain about not getting free support from others.
I think that even though the percentage of our wealth given by the government is less, the amount of money given is far greater. To other countries receiving the money it is still more than they are getting from other countries. This amount of money from our government plus the vast amount of donations from individual citizens makes the United States probably the most generous of nations. So I think the statement made from the celebrities about America not giving enough is wrong because we actually give more individually and as a country than any other place.

When u walk into a store n you see someone give a quarter to the salvation army you would give 50cents because its all about who gives more. Americans arent cheap they devote time and money into other countries and that should be acknowledged.

It's not very hard for you to donate quickly and efficiently, which leads the average American into donating. Do I think we donate too little? Not neccesarily. We ARE in a recession. It'd be intresting to see those same counties that were in the camparison graph for how much money they give and see what the results are for how much time and how many oragnizations from each country are actaully there in the countries. Because honestly, money helps things, but it can only go so far. You have to have people putting that money into action. In countries like Nigeria, most of the donated money probably ends up "dissapearing" once it reaches the hands of a government offical. Poor countries like Nigeria could recieve millions of dollars, but they may never get actual help because of their greedy government.
I think it is a good thing that people do most of the giving, and not the government because the money given to the private charities to help other countries actually makes it into the hands of the people. For example, our government for a long time gave relief money and food to the government of Zimbabwe to feed the people, but the resources never actually made it to the people that needed it. on the other hand, when Americans donate money to private charities, such as Compassion International, the money isn't given to corrupt governments, but workers actually go over to the countries and help the people, without as much money getting lost in corrupt foreign bureaucracies.
