Organ Donor Registry

One of the biggest crises America faces today is the lack of organs. There is always a shortage of needed vital organs for people waiting on the organ donation list. According to womenshealth.gov, there are 92,000 people who are on that waiting list. Everyday that they don't have that needed organ is one more day closer to their death. Coming from the same source, EIGHTEEN people die EVERYDAY waiting for an organ. Only SEVENTEEN people each day get a new organ, out of the 92,000 people who need an organ. Why do you need a perfectly good organ when you are dead? These need to be going to people who still have a chance at life.
There are many reasons why people don't become organ donors. First off, someone could just skip over the organ donation indication when he is filling out his driver's license. Some people lack the knowledge of the crisis at hand and they are uninformed about the process. Sometimes when a person has marked that they want to be an organ donor their family can change it. I don't see why organs are so important to the dead. They aren't using them anymore.
The process isn't as gruesome as some people may believe, in actuality is quite simple. After the person has passed away, there is a routine surgery to remove the organs. After that the body is neatly sewn back up. This process does not interfere with funeral plans. One act of kindness could save up to SEVEN people. Almost every organ can be used in some way to help save another life. Just few organs used are the heart, kidney, liver, and lung. This one act could help a mother with polycystic kidney disease or a grandfather with coronary artery disease.
I think that a law should be passed that every American citizen with a driver's license/ state ID will be a registered organ donor by default, unless they indicate "no". This will help the people who are suffering from these horrible diseases, and if a person is really opposed to giving an organ they can mark no. It is not taking away anyone's right because they can still choose no. I think the majority of people wouldn't mind being an organ donor, but they don't know how to sign up for it or they are too lazy. Something needs to be done about the thousands of people dying each year waiting for an organ.

There is nothing wrong with donating organs, and I agree with you about creating a law donating organs when registering our drivers lisence. Although, it is scary in a way, because the idea of having 92,000 people need organs meaning 92,000 dead people can save their lives.

I think your idea is really great! According to www.organdonor.gov there are 14,394 donors in 2008. Which is a very small percentage considering there are 100,536 candidates on the waiting list as of today. That is a lot of people! But what if people just don't want to be donor and aren't looking over the registration? We would be left in the same spot as were are now. Some don't want to donate because of personal or religious reasons and some can't because of medications they might have been on. Also, some might get angry for the fact that they were unaware of being donor even though it was their own fault for not looking over everything. I think this would be a good step in hopes of getting more donors, I am just not sure how well the outcome would be.

i totally agree. I did my persuasive speech on becoming an organ donor in 9th grade and feel very strongly about the matter. i don't understand why people wouldn't donate their organs to save a life. If I don't need my organs when I'm dead I would gladly give them to a life whom someone else cares about. I feel the same way about giving blood. If you got it, why not give it? I don't care if you're afraid of needles. It's saving a life and I think that should be reason enough.

There is a simple way to put a big dent in the organ shortage -- give organs first to people who have agreed to donate their own organs when they die.

Giving organs first to organ donors will convince more people to register as organ donors. It will also make the organ allocation system fairer. People who aren't willing to share the gift of life should go to the back of the waiting list as long as there is a shortage of organs.

Anyone who wants to donate their organs to others who have agreed to donate theirs can join LifeSharers. LifeSharers is a non-profit network of organ donors who agree to offer their organs first to other organ donors when they die. Membership is free at www.lifesharers.org or by calling 1-888-ORGAN88. There is no age limit, parents can enroll their minor children, and no one is excluded due to any pre-existing medical condition.

i totally agree. not trying to be mean but when people are dead they are going to be buried or cremated. so its not like anyone would actually see that thier missing organs. and the doctors really do a good job at stitching them back together. And cornias are in really high need for people with eye diseases.curlyque's idea about making organ donating like a default on driver's license is a really good idea. unless they say no all should have to give thier organs.
