Americans' Views on Abortion Remain Static

Okay, so you want to talk about abortion, well here is an iteresting poll on Americans views on abortion. Where are you on this poll? Legal always, under certain circumstances, never legal. Is this a big issue for you? Is it bigger than Iraq or the economy? Comments?

I would be in the percentage of legal under certaim circumstances because there is always the what if... the mother and baby could die in childbirth due to a rare condition wouldn't it be good to save one life also circumstances of an extremely young girl being raped. For me there is a lot of gray areas but I stand by abortion being illegal just to anybody who thinks it would be the easy way out... I mean that's just wrong.
Honestly this isn't as big an issue for me I think the majority of people feel the same way about the issue that it is completely wrong or there is a slight gray area. It shouldn't be or isn't for me more important than Iraq or the economy in the facts of choosing candidates.

1) I agree with Kendra.

2) In my opinion, the more pressing question is whether Roe v. Wade should be overturned, thus allowing duly elected state legislators to decide these matters in each state in accordance with the will of the voters in each state.

In my view, the answer is a resounding and utterly unqualified “yes”. I believe Roe v. Wade was egregiously unconstitutional and must be overturned. But, this dissenting opinion of the day (1973) says it far better than I ever could.

In particular, this excerpt really sums it up:

“With all due respect, I dissent. I find nothing in the language or history of the Constitution to support the Court's judgment. The Court simply fashions and announces a new constitutional right for pregnant mothers [410 U.S. 222] and, with scarcely any reason or authority for its action, invests that right with sufficient substance to override most existing state abortion statutes. The upshot is that the people and the legislatures of the 50 States are constitutionally dissentitled to weigh the relative importance of the continued existence and development of the fetus, on the one hand, against a spectrum of possible impacts on the mother, on the other hand.”

The other dissenting opinion of the day can be found here.

More on the history of Roe v. Wade can be found here.

I have not examined the entire entry and cannot comment on the objectivity or quality of the overall presentation.

3) Thank you for allowing me to share my views with your students.

Honestly, I think it reflects really poorly on our society when we care more about the Iraq war and the economy then we do about the murder of millions of our nations children. To quote the great Mother Theresa "it is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish."
