Gun Control

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." (US Constitution). People have believed that government is trying to take this right away from them completely. They have been severely misinformed though. The federal government under the Obama administration has announced their ideas for gun control laws. President Obama has openly said that there should be restrictions on your 2nd Amendment rights for safety reasons.

I think that gun control laws are for the good of the people due to some very frightening stats about them. You see gun control is meant for safety. The U.S. has had definite issues with guns in the past. Such as this fact " In 2006, there were 30,896 gun deaths in the U.S" (I.C.A.H.V). That is an alarming number to think about.

Also another big problem with not having gun control laws is that people obviously abuse it. Things such as murder, gun fights, and yes even suicide occur. This is due to the fact that our country has too loose of restrictions on the 2nd Amendment. Things can be taken into consideration. Such as concealed weapons bans. This makes it so no one can carry a hidden weapon without a license.

There are ways you can keep the 2nd Amendment true while keeping precautions. When people abuse their rights they need to be fixed. There has been gun concealment laws in Nebraska proposing that all assault weapons would be banned. The NRA opposes these laws though. They say citizens are safer with their ability to carry weapons. It is supposed to be used for your self defense (NRA).

People also need to realize that just because it is in the Bill of Rights does not mean that the law is untouchable. It is a lot like if you have free speech it is limited, because you cannot use words of threat. You obviously are allowed to use your guns for hunting and self defense, but not to harm others.

However, if you also look at the constitution at does not say that you can have the right to bear arms if you are a normal citizen. It does state if you are part of the militia then it is allowed (A case for gun control). This was proven in the supreme court case Stevens vs. United States (A case for gun control).

It is difficult to find how the government can get around an interpretation of the constitution. Obviously it is because there are many different views and opinions. The government has a hard task. It is seen to create a cycle. A survey in 1979 showed that people bought guns because they feared that too many criminals have guns and they needed them for their common defense (A case for gun control).

The government doesn't necessarily need to make it so guns are bad. I believe they just need to make guns harder to obtain so that your average joe cannot just go and pick up a weapon, and do whatever they want with it. So, I would say the government needs stricter control while keeping the rights of the constitution close to their citizens.
