Part 4 (of 6) Death of a Nation - Russia

Some more language in this clip, but this shows some of what we were talking about in class about the discrimination and ethnonationalism in Russia. Kind of Scary.

That is like taking a tour of the base and at the end they say let's go have some beer. That is so weird and it is not professional. Why would they want the journalists to drink with them. Why could they not just drink by themselves? I do not understand drinking in general. Is it fun to get drunk and feel terrible the next day? Is it to try to get rid of the pain or fill the empty void inside? I just do not get it.

Actually, drinking is a great way to remove the pain temporarily. While in the long run it isn't a good idea, when civil society is limited, drinking is understandable in order to forget problems and stress.

This really does a great job in showing just how much corruption is actually in the Russian police force and other national agencies. It's one thing to hear Mr. Keller tell us that a country has corruption in its institutions but this clip really shows the extent and degree of the corruption.

I find it funny that the Russian Police actually think whipping people is fun. I mean, I guess they are drunk, but still, they WHIP the director!
I also like how Marcel Theroux totally just gives up the director to get whipped. Now that's a friend right there.

It's kinda funny how these Russians are Nazis, the same Nazis who massacred them in WW2 and hate their guts. I was touched by how genuinely passionate the journalist is about Russia's survival.

If this is what government is acting like then the society in which it governs must be miserable. This a big reason why the Russian mafia operate so easily. The police are less likely to stop a criminal than they are to sit down and have a drink with them. that is unless they haven't had a good whipping for that but i guess that is what journalists are for in Russia. The police in this video seem particularly juvenile. They can just prance around without any sort of accountability, similar to the Mexican police. Putin has been cracking down on the Oligarchs, but if he cant get his fundamentals down, he or Russia are in for problems. If Russia is going to be democratized the bottom line is that Russia has to get it done.

In other countries, there isn't as much of a stigma on alochohol as there is in America. In Germany, kids are allowed a small amount of beer at dinner. I'm not saying that the Russian police binge-drinking is okay, but in other societies, this isn't nearly as looked down upon as it is in our country. I understand that they should be more responsible, but in their culture this could be acceptable. You never know until you've been there yourself, so maybe we shouldn't be so quick to criticize.

Racism is a common tpoic in some of my classes and we say how we still have a long way to go. We talk about prejudice and how stereotypes can harm possible relationships. The racism in Russia today is far more brutal and destructive. And with Russian population declining should they welcome these struggling refugees.

These videos were incredible. I really connected what we had been learning with these videos. I couldn't believe they were actually taken away like that for video taping.
