War on Terrorism?

When someone mentions "the war on terrorism" we all know what they are talking about. Our battle with Iraq. It has been in the news since we can remember, and there isn't one person who hasn't heard about it. But are we really fighting a war on terrorism? Terrorism is using violence to intimidate for political purposes, and we believe 9/11 is an intimidation. But why did they attack us?
"slay the pagans wherever ye find them"
it is the "duty of every Muslim" to "kill Americans anywhere. you are the worst civilization witnessed by the history of mankind: You are the nation who, rather than ruling by the Shariah of Allah in its Constitution and Laws, choose to invent your own laws as you will and desire. You separate religion from your policies, contradicting the pure nature which affirms Absolute Authority to the Lord and your Creator." - bin Laden, wikipedia
These were the words from Osama bin Laden to the USA. Why did they attack us? For our religion and government. Why do we attack back? Is it to establish a government run our way? Is it because they have oil? Is it because their religious views are "wrong?" First off the Constitution states a separation between church and state. Here is where it gets interesting
If we attack Iraq for attacking us first, is that right? Say someone walks up and hits you. Is it right to hit them back? Or do you walk away? This is a larger scale of just that. Or did we attack Iraq for not being like us? Was their government and religion corrupt? If this is the reason, who next; China? Then we start the persecution of everyone who isn't "like us." But that makes us the bad guys for doing exactly what Bin Laden wanted to do to us.

I think that our government could care less what religion terrorists are. Their government is influencing people to, as quoted, "kill Americans anywhere." America is trying to dethrone the obviously legitimate threat. These countries are left without a stable government, and America's leaving these countries would only further the conflict. I think when it comes down to it, the reasons for the war are simple, and pulling out of the Middle East is going to be extremely difficult.

I am not saying I agree with the war on iraq or that I don't agree, but we had a conversation in class today that I believe relates to this blog. Before the U.S. began the war, Iraq was ran under a dictatorship of Saddam Hussein. After we invaded, they have been working on forming a democracy. I found of today, that after the invasion more than 50 MILLION people are now FREE. If we had walked away we would not have had this outcome. But because we did fight back for what we thought was the right, we have helped a tremendous amount of people.

I would just like to point out the 9/11 was NOT the first time Bin Laden attacked us. It was not the only incidence where he threatened our country. In fact, he even declared war in 1996. In 1992, he bombed the U.S.S. Cole in Yemen, in '93 he and his organization attempted to collapse the WTC with a car bombing, and in '98 they attacked two US embassies in Africa. If we had not acted, who's to say that there wouldn't have been larger and more fatal attacks on us?

On Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan...

You said,
"Why did they attack us? For our religion and government." Well... yes you are right but you are barely scratching the surface. They attacked us because they are religious fanatics who would rather see the world burn than have any diversity. They would kill thousands upon thousands of people globally, not just in America, just because we don't think like them. Why do we attack back? To establish a government our way? No. Oil? No. Because their religious views are wrong? No. We are not attacking the entirety of the afghani population, and we are not attacking Islam. We are attacking fundamentalists that have infringed on the natural rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness of not just americans, but of every human person on this world. Their religion has nothing to do with it. We are not persecuting the Islamic way of life. We are fighting Bin Laden and Al Qaeda because we are trying to protect every innocent being from any further harm. Innocents such as the thousands who perished on September 11.
