Why we should stay in Iraq

Why we should stay in Iraq

There are many reasons why the U.S. cannot withdraw our forces from Iraq before the mission is accomplished. Why? This is because our national security depends on the outcome of the war. If Iraq goes to the old regime, it will be similar to Afghanistan all over again. If terrorists do not gain control after the U.S. withdrawal, it will be likely that Iran or a neighboring country will. If Iran gains control of Iraq, they will dominate most of the world's oil supply. They would wreak chaos on the economies of western nations if they had the ability to shut off the flow of oil. This will cause a lot of tension between the nations around the world. Why else should we stay in Iraq? Our nation's reputation depends on it. Other countries are watching to see if we will keep our promises. Nations around the world have seen that we cannot be trusted when the going gets tough. A prime example is Vietnam. Since then we have walked out of hostages in Iran, leaving marines in Beirut, and leaving Somalia. The rest of the world is watching us as dictators around the world are rising, such as in Cuba and Russia. Violence in Iraq according to recent reports are down by 70% and is the lowest in several years. The Al Anbar province, once thought lost to the enemy, has now become a symbol for hope for the rest of Iraq. The fact is that insurgencies almost never win unless the target government simply gives up, just like in Vietnam. South Vietnam only lost the war because of the forces invasion from North Vietnam when we refused to support them and left them in the dust. The success is spreading outward from Baghdad as terrorist cowards flee the capital for the countryside. Withdrawal will not be easy for the people of Iraq. When U.S. troops left South Vietnam, hundreds of thousands of South Vietnamese were killed or imprisoned for years. Many thousands more became refugees and died trying to escape. Those who remain are persecuted even today and have very few freedoms. I find this very true to today.I find that the Islamic enemy is more cruel than the North Vietnamese. We would be letting innocent people die at the hands of the enemy. The war will not end with no U.S. troops in Iraq. The war will only rapidly accelerate. If we lose in Iraq, the enemy will try to take the war into our own shores as they have done before. If anyone needs a refresher, 9/11 happened even before the invasion of Iraq. Also, setting a timeline for withdrawal will just make the enemy wait until we leave and resume with all the violence. With all of this in consideration, I think that we should stay in Iraq and finish the fight.

We went into iraq because of WMD, not because of 9-11. The terrorism that happens there there is a result of the invasion, not a cause. However, I do for the most part agree that we should stay there. The 28,000,000 citizens no longer live under an oppressive dictator. During their first election, 70% of Iraqis voted, risking their lives, while only 43% of the US voted. We must ensure that they have a stable govt. before we leave to ensure that these millions can enjoy the freedom of democracy.

I think staying in Iraq for our reputation is a poor defence, especially when there are 19 year old kids fighting and dying, so you tell them that we need to stay for our reputation.(which is already tarnished because of this misguided war) Concerning Iran and Somalia I must make corrections. We did try to send a rescue mission to get the hostages out in Iran, but it failed, and we had a pretty weak president at the time. Somalia, after the events of Oct. 1993 and the images of dead American bodies being dragged around created such an uproar from the American people that it was obvious that Clinton would have to get our soldiers out, or commit political suicide. Please don't tell me you think Cuba is rising, I'm not even going to bother answering that. Vietnam is tricky, there were a lot of errors, such as even propping up the South Vietnamese regime(corrupt). We had no clear strategy, screwing with internal problems of the S. Vietnamese and not letting them take care of their own country while we kept out the N. Vietnamese. We did this in Korea and it was a success. Bottom line: Vietnam is a different case and should not be compared. Saying insurgencies almost never win is laughable. It's happening right now.It may seem like we are winning but once we leave the whole thing is going to go up in civil war. One of the tactics our Army is using is bribery to pay off tribal leaders and such. The objective of the surge was to create political stability in the Iraqi gov't. It was not to kill a bunch of insurgents so they get replaced by even more bad guys. They failed to meet their objective. Finally, Iraq is not a front for the war on terror, its a diversion. We're wasting our treasury, reputation, and children on a war that we started based on lies. Now all we are doing is fighting pissed off Iraqis and maybe a few foreign fighters. I'll limit this post to the above.

I watched Charle's Wilsons War the other day, and i find This situation very similar the Russian Afghanistan war. Where as we spent millions of money into helping them, but if we don't ensure that Iraq is stable, then choas will soon return once we leave. And i agree, we should stay, but we should slowly start withdrawing our troops.

I think since we started the war we need to finish it. It would be really unfair if we withdrew right now and left the Iraqis with a country in chaos.

Although I disagree with this, it does make a few strong points to stay in Iraq, mostly doing with the global oil. Iran -might- gain control of Iraq if we pulled out, but they aren't the only source. A lot of it is from Saudi Arabia and areas such as that. I agree with one of the above commentors, staying in for our reputation is pretty much not a good arguement. I think our rep was trashed when we went in there in the first place and found nothing. As good as we're supposed to be, it seems like we overstretch our bounds as a country sometimes.

After 9-11 a large majority of the U.S. was soon filled with nationalism and almost everyone wanted to go to War. We need to stay and finish what we started, but I also think that we push our government too much on other countries, like Iraq. Telling everyone our government is the best,oh our government is the best really just pushes the fact that w/o a figure in control everything, leads to coas.

I agree with this article that we should stay. Leaving now would basically put Iraq back in the same situation it was in. Utter chaos. And i also agree with makemeasandwich. We push our government onto other countries way too much. And this thought brings up another thought that because we are forcing our ideas on others so much are we almost asking terrorists to attack us. Are we asking for it?
