SNL Appearance Good or Bad for Palin

Sarah Palin entered the Republican National Convention and immediately brought the crowd to life. Her acceptance of  the vice presidential nominee finally gave some hope to the McCain campaign. Her speech rallied voters more than John McCain's speech. The gap between John McCain and Barrack Obama evened out and the race became a dead heat. The past weekend Sarah Palin appeared on Saturday Night Live. The show saw its biggest audience in 14 years. Palin's skits received laughs and they were the talk of Monday morning.  Palin showed her sense of humor but did the show hurt or help the campaign overall? That question really depends on who you are asking.

In my opinion it hurt the campaign. The show seemed to make Palin as more of a media mobile rather than a vice presidential candidate. Palin showing off as a celebrity is a bit hypocritical of the McCain campaign since early campaign ads criticized Obama by calling him the world's biggest celebrity. Whether the show will effect the campaign at the poles is anyone's guess. The major audience of SNL are the young voters. It is dislikely that they will be swayed by a SNL episode and if they are will they turn out on November 4th? A Wall Street Journal poll taken after the SNL episode showed a gap between McCain and Obama widening, Obama is now up by 10 percent. Also more people are beginning to view Palin negatively, 47 percent view her negatively and only 38 percent view her positively.

Palin seemed to ridicule herself and is that what we want in a vice president? Sure it was funny but the humor went to far. Some would say lighten up but honestly can you see someone who makes a complete mockery of themselves as a vice president? This is a serious time for Americans and a candidate should not be joking around on Saturday Night Live. The humor she presented was even border line inappropriate.  The Saturday Night Live episode seemed like a last minute shot at receiving votes, though the attempt is probably going to come up short. It is sad to think that a very serious matter such as a presidential convention is resorting to SNL.

This SNL problem only adds to other problems the vice presidential hopeful is facing. She abused her powers by firing a public safety commissioner for refusing to fire her ex brother-in-law and a disastrous Katie Couric interview. Clearly the spark this Maverick brought to the McCain campaign is long gone. She now seems to be a more of a problem to the McCain campaign. As Obama gains voter's support, John McCain has to try and regain states while keeping an eye on Palin. Maybe Governor Palin should drop out of the race and return to SNL for a full time job.

SNL is meant to make fun of people and over exaggerate things and behaviors of people. I really don't agree with those people who start to not think positively about Palin because of SNL.
And I do realize that we are talking about nominee for VP of the US, but are we taking this election too seriously?

I would like to add that Barack Obama has also made an appearance on SNL- in a Halloween skit with Amy Poehler as Hilary Clinton and Darrell Hammond as Bill Clinton. Also, Obama was a guest on The Ellen Degeneres Show and danced with Ellen to Beyonce's "Crazy In Love." These actions didn't seem to hurt his campaign; in fact they might have helped. It has been said that Barack Obama is attracting the young votes- these appearances were seen as "cool" tp the young voting population. There are bigger issues than a SNL appearance that are lowering Palin's popularity.

I enjoyed this thoroughly.

However, I do agree with cracker jacks. Palin's SNL appearance is the least of her problems!

The only reason Palin is getting s lot of negative attention is because the republican party is supposed to be conservative. Palin stepped out from being just a politician to make a joke and the old serious people didn't like that. The fact is, media is intertwining politics and entertainment, that way it's accessible to a bigger demographic. Palin is a normal person, it's not like when your nominated into office they take your sense of humor too.

Good point poprox, Palin's party is conservative, and an SNL apperence is perpendicular to the republican view. But, the goal of this, i would think, is to reach a new audience. I'm happy Palin did this, plus, it was all just in good fun.

it is extremely obvious now that palin is doing more to unintentionally hurt mccains campaign than help it. at first she was something new and exciting. now she seems to just be continually making messes that the party has to try and clean up.

if mccain had chosen a different vp candidate maybe he'd still have a chance of winning the election.

I don't know about everyone else, but i think it is great when someone in politics can admit that they have flaws and can do it in a way that makes people laugh. Whether or not this was just a stunt to gain publicity is irrelevant to me. Palin realizes she is not perfect and can laugh at herself and her flaws and i think that is totally and completely awesome. The SNL appearance shows us that Palin is secure in who she is and is able to laugh along with other people and that tells me a lot about her and it should tell everyone else something about her too. Critter is right this election is serious and could be one of the most important elections in our nation's history, but so could any presidential election and we won't really be able to tell until the next election in four years so in the meantime i think i am going to laugh at and with Palin.

Like "Critter" said, SNL's sole purpose is to make serious things seem ridiculous. It is the job of the comedian to find the line and cross it. SNL is made of comedians and the show isn't going to change anytime soon even if Sarah Palin is making an appearance. Another thing, I think it's good for a candidate to be able to laugh at themselves. This eludes to the fact that the candidate has a sense of humor. I think it is much better to have a candidate that has a personality instead of one that is totally stoic. It's much easier to trust someone if you can see a little bit of who they are.

i doesn't really matter, its not like just because of her SNL appearence its going to greatly change the voters minds. Barack has done one as well as clinton
